Inter-proximal Reduction (IPR)

IPR stands for inter-proximal reduction. It is the process of creating very small amounts of space between pairs of teeth in order to allow the teeth to move as needed during treatment. inter-proximal reduction (IPR) (also called inter-proximal enamel reduction / slendering, air rotor stripping (ARS) or reproximation) is the practice of mechanically removing enamel from between the teeth to achieve orthodontic ends, such as to correct crowding, or reshape the contact area between neighbouring teeth.

IPR is not harmful to the enamel. Multiple university studies have proven that the enamel after polishing is actually smoother than natural enamel, and is NOT weaker or at higher risk for cavities/decay.

IPR or Inter-proximal Reduction is a common procedure used during Invisalign orthodontic treatment. IPR is often necessary when patients have crowded teeth.

Although it sounds like it could be a painful procedure, IPR does not hurt as enamel does not contain any nerves. It is a quick procedure which is pain-free and often carried out during one short appointment. Although no discomfort is felt, it is normal to feel some pressure and vibration during the procedure.
