Gum Disease and Periodontitis
Periodontal disease is the inflammation and infection of the gums. It is cause by a build up of plaque above and underneath the gums causes by poor oral hygiene.
Early stages of gum disease
Bacteria in plaque can damage the gums and cause gingivitis. This can usually be treated successfully by removing the plaque followed by proper brushing and flossing everyday.
Advanced stages of gum disease
The advanced stage of gum disease is called periodontitis. It can cause serious damage to the teeth and gums and bone that supports the teeth.
As the initial gingivitis gets worse, gum pockets are formed and the gums may start receding from the teeth. As a result of the gums and bone recede the teeth can become loose and all out or require extraction.
Signs of periodontal disease
– Red, swollen, tender, painful or bleeding gums.
– Gums that shrunk from the teeth.
– Persistent bad breath.
– A bad Taste in the mouth.
– Abscesses between the teeth and gums.
– The fit of a denture has changed.
– Loose teeth; drifting apart of teeth and gaps between teeth.
